Introduction

In the spring of 2006, I had the privilege of taking a very early look at what would eventually become ASP.NET MVC. Scott Guthrie of Microsoft arranged a personal demo just for me backstage at the DevConnections conference in balmy Nice, France. At the time, I had just started playing with ASP.NET Web Forms and the Model-View-Presenter (MVP) pattern. I expected to see the usual great set of designers to automatically define models, controllers, and views. Instead, I was surprised to see a brand-new application model being worked out on top of the same ASP.NET runtime. (Note that what I saw at that time was at best a distant relative to what you know today as ASP.NET MVC, but the key facts were already visible.)

Not that getting rid of the postback model looked like a bad thing to me, but frankly the idea of changing the programming model quite significantly didn’t impress me that much. The combination of ASP.NET Web Forms and MVP seemed to me a more natural and less disruptive way to achieve separation of concerns and overall better quality code. Scott pointed me to a couple of team members that I pinged a few times during the summer for more information and newer builds. But nothing happened. Instead, in the summer of 2006 all the excitement being generated was for the upcoming ASP.NET AJAX Extensions (remember Atlas?). Overwhelmed by the AJAX bandwagon, I gravitated to this clear sentiment: that funky ASP.NET MVC thing was just a proof of concept, a good-for-fun project. So I removed it from my mind.

LINQPad exposes a new extensiblity model that lets you offer first-class support for third-party ORMs and other querying sources. Visit http://www.linqpad.net/Extensibility.aspx for information on writing a driver.
You can now query WCF Data Services as easily as a database. Click 'Add Connection' and then click the 'Data Services' radio button.
SQL Azure is now fully supported. Just click the 'Azure' radio button in the connection dialog.
A single-click plugin is available to query SQLite and MySQL Enterprise/Community servers via the IQToolkit. To download, click 'Add Connection', and then click 'View more drivers'.
LINQPad now lets you specify an arbitrary provider and connection string when connecting to an Entity Framework EDM. This means you can use third-party EF providers that support other databases such as Oracle or Sqlite.
SQL CE databases larger than 256MB are now supported via an option on the Connection dialog.
There's now a button to the right of 'Results' that exports results into Excel or Word - with or without formatting.
With queries that Dump multiple result sets or values, LINQPad now displays data in the output window as soon as it becomes available.
You can now define extension methods in queries of type 'C# Program'. Just write a static class below the Main method with the desired extension methods.
There's a new 'Find All' option on the Edit menu that searches all queries and samples.
You can inject hyperlinks into the output by instantiating the new Hyperlinq class. You can populate a Hyperlinq with either an ordinary URL or a query that will execute in another window when clicked.
You can create additional DataContexts of the same schema by instantiating the UserQuery class, passing in a new connection or connection string.
There's now a 'Close all connections' option on the Connection context menu. This is handy when you want to drop a database.
LINQPad supports SSL connections to SQL Server via a new checkbox on the connection dialog.
On the Edit menu, there's a new 'Execute Shell Command' option which inserts a calls a helper method that lets you easily execute operating system commands. The output is returned as an array of lines, and is written to LINQPad's output window.
In Edit | Preferences, there's a new Advanced tab with more customization options, including options for editor tabs and column widths.
Performance has improved considerably with very large schemas (more than 1000 tables).
The System.Transactions assembly + namespace is now automatically imported.

Introduction

When .NET first appeared, it introduced a small avalanche of new technologies. There was a whole new way to write web applications (ASP.NET), a whole new way to connect to databases (ADO.NET), new typesafe languages (C# and VB .NET), and a managed runtime (the CLR). Not least among these new technologies was Windows Forms, a library of classes for building Windows applications.

Although Windows Forms is a mature and full-featured toolkit, it’s hardwired to essential bits of Windows plumbing that haven’t changed much in the past ten years. Most significantly, Windows Forms relies on the Windows API to create the visual appearance of standard user interface elements such as buttons, text boxes, check boxes, and so on. As a result, these ingredients are essentially uncustomizable. For example, if you want to create a stylish glow button you need to create a custom control and paint every aspect of the button (in all its different states) using a lower-level drawing model. Even worse, ordinary windows are carved up into distinct regions, with each control getting its own piece of real estate. As a result, there’s no good way for the painting in one control (for example, the glow effect behind a button) to spread into the area owned by another control. And don’t even think about introducing animated effects such as spinning text, shimmering buttons, shrinking windows, or live previews because you’ll have to paint every detail by hand.

At the time, Microsoft LINQ (Language Integrated Query) and LINQ to SQL had been out for a while and were gaining a lot of attention. Both the Entity Framework and LINQ to SQL showed that Microsoft was very serious about improving developer productivity, by providing an infrastructure for managing relational data as objects and programming against a conceptual model instead of directly against a storage schema. While Microsoft did its best to tout the Entity Framework, it went somewhat unnoticed out of the gate, primarily due to the rise in popularity of LINQ to SQL and the misunderstanding from the public of what the Entity Framework really was.

By the time this book hits the shelves, Visual Studio 2010 with the .NET Framework 4.0 and ADO.NET Entity Framework will have just been released or will be very shortly. Yet, I still get questions from people wondering what the Entity Framework is or how it differs from LINQ to SQL. Thus, the reason for this book is twofold; first, it will answer the question of what the Entity Framework is and why Microsoft is dedicating a lot of resources and energy to its development, advancement, and developer acceptance. Second, it will discuss all the new features and enhancements that will be available in ADO.NET 4.0, which will be released with Visual Studio 2010. This book is intended to address two types of developers: those who have never worked with the Entity Framework before, and those who have but are looking at what the ADO.NET 4.0 Entity Framework has to offer. As such, it will cover all aspects of the Entity Framework and, where appropriate, point out the new features and enhancements found in the EF 4.0.

The Entity Framework does not, nor is intended to, replace existing ADO.NET data access technologies; rather, it is an enhancement to ADO.NET, providing developers an augmented approach to accessing data, letting them work with a conceptual model, and thus enabling developers to deal with data as objects and properties, a concept already familiar to them.

It has been said that Sir Isaac Newton was the last person to know everything. Visual Basic .NET changed the language in much more fundamental ways and made it much harder to understand every last detail of Visual Basic. The .NET Framework added powerful new tools to Visual Basic, but those tools came at the cost of increased complexity. Associated technologies have been added to the language at an ever - increasing rate, so today it is impossible for anyone to be an expert on every topic that deals with Visual Basic.

To cover every nook and cranny in Visual Basic you would need an in - depth understanding of database technologies, custom controls, custom property editors, XML, cryptography, serialization, two - and three - dimensional graphics, multi - threading, refl ection, the code document object model (DOM), diagnostics, globalization, Web Services, inter - process communication, work fl ow, Offi ce, ASP, Windows Forms, WPF, and much more.
